BARRY COUNTY, MI – Consumers Energy is working to repair a leak in a high-pressure natural-gas line that will affect about 4,500 customers in the Hastings area.

Crews will be going door-to-door on Thursday, April 6, to temporarily disconnect natural gas. Consumers will work to restore service to most by the end of the weekend.

The leak is on a six-inch steel gas line under the Thornapple River. The leak led to a loss of pressure that began affecting customers in the Hastings area on Wednesday night..

Consumers overnight began work on a temporary bypass to restore gas service before making permanent repairs. The leak affects 4,500 customers from western Nashville to Hastings but does not affect others outside of those areas.

It is an “unusual situation,” Christopher Fultz, Consumers Energy’s vice president of natural gas operations, said in a statement.

“We are committed to our customers and understand that this will create a hardship. We are in contact with community leaders, and our crews will be working around the clock to safely return full natural gas service to the entire community.”

Consumers will investigate to determine what caused the leak.

Consumers will begin temporarily disconnecting homes and businesses Thursday morning. Once natural gas is added to the system, workers will go door-to-door lighting pilot lights.
